What Did He Say?

I am not a student of the English language but anyone who has gone through our school system, at any grade level, knows that words have meaning. The meanings may or may not have been changed through the Years, added to or subtracted from but they all have meaning. This is why we should be careful when "finding the right words." You would think that someone who attended a "VERY EXPENSIVE" institution of higher learning would understand this very simple fact, especially when they happen to be a Lawyer and taught Constitutional Law and would like to be the next President of the United States. Where is this leading "You Ask?" Let us take a close look at a recent statement from a politician who was "trying to score points." I quote "they are going to have to explain why Hamas, now controls Gaza, Hamas, that was strengthened because the United States insisted that we should have Democratic Elections in the Palestinian Authority." This was part of a speech delivered in Watertown, SD., on May 16, 2008 by Senator Obama in response to what he called President Bush's appeasement accusations against him. Let us look closely at the most important sentence that was said in the entire speech. "Hamas, that was strengthened because the United States insisted that we should have Democratic Elections in the Palestinian Authority." We all know who Hamas is. We all know what STRENGTHENED means. We also know where and what The United States is, you probably live there. Insisted is also a given. That we should have? Get this one later (item 1:). We all know what a Democratic Election is, we are supposed to be in the middle of one now which is being fought very hard on both sides (Democrats are still in primary, Republicans?????).
The dictionary defines Democratic (the one that applies here) as (: of, relating to, or favoring democracy), (item 2:).Elections (1) (: an act or process of electing (2)(the right, power, or privilege of making a choice)(item 3:). In the Palestinian Authority, we all should know this is the group who is supposed to represent the people of Palestine and we all should know where Palestine is. Now this was a powerful and very strong statement for a Senator, especially one who is trying to be elected PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Here is the problem we ALL should be having with the Prepared (the highlight is on PRE) statement. Item 1: "that we should have." I know that we have an interest in Palestine, as far as stability for the region is concerned but I don't think we should have any other interest, especially elections (which "WE" did not have there to begin with). Which brings us to item 2: , item 3: " Democratic, Elections." Holding Democratic Elections is the first step for some people, all people, anywhere and everywhere to be free.
You don't always get whom "YOU" want but the majority of the people do, providing there is more than one party or candidate (unlike Russia, Iran, Cuba, China, just to mention a few that doesn't). I am sorry Senator Obama, but these are your words alone. Mrs. Obama didn't make them. Rev. Wright didn't make them. Only you can tell the American people and all the people around the world, who look to the United States as an example of what their life could be if they had our type of government or better yet, if they were living here. HOW, and I repeat HOW, could it have been "A MISTAKE THAT THE UNITED STATES INSISTED THAT DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS BE HELD IN PALESTINE?". PLEASE! PLEASE! TELL US ALL, what kind of Elections should have been held (if ANY) in Palestine. Tell us all, what kind of election YOU think THE UNITED STATES should have. YOU, Senator Obama gave this prepared statement, that the National Media (Newspapers, Broadcast TV, Cable TV and let us not forget Radio) did not think was very important, for some reason or another, and failed the American Public by not reporting it. If anyone missed the "LIVE" Broad cast, they did not hear this statement. All the American Public DID HEAR was that "Senator Obama takes on McCain-Bush, Obama will debate McCain-Bush any time." A GREAT, GREAT injustice was done to the American Public when this statement was "NOT" questioned by the press or public, then or now, especially after the Senator's speech today (May 23, 2008) to the Cuban/American Association in Florida, which will likely be the subject of my next posting. Everyone please leave a comment and let me know if you have been served, by the people we depend upon to tell us what is happening in the world, better yet, tell the Media what you think of their coverage of the IMPORTANT stories that affect us every day, (POLITELY, of course).
